EAST CENTRAL OFFENSE ROLLS IN OPENING ROUND WIN OVER QUITMAN

HURLEY, Mississippi -- All season long, East Central coach Seth Smith has expressed concern over his offense -- saying while his defense was unquestionably championship caliber, the offense still had a ways to go. That offense exploded for 56 points Friday night as the #1 Hornets rolled to a 56-20 win over Quitman in the opening round of the state 4A playoffs. Undefeated East Central is seeking a return trip to the state title game, where it lost a year ago to Noxubee County. Looking at the score, it would appear the Hornet defense, which entered the game giving up only 7.5 points per game, had an off night. But East Central led 42-0 with 10 minutes left in the game and the Panthers scored their three touchdowns against the Hornet reserves. Running back Dylan Grinsteinner led the offensive onslaught with a huge night, rushing 15 times for 201 yards and four touchdowns. Quarterback Will Young had 14 carries for 110 yards and two scores and Cameron Gray added 10 carries for 82 yards. Grinsteinner scored twice in each of the first two quarters as the Hornets took a 28-0 halftime lead. He scored on runs of 65, 4, 55 and 15 yards. In the third quarter, it was Young's turn, with the junior scoring on runs of 15 and 35 yards. The two fourth quarter scores would come on an 85-yard kickoff return by Trenton Baldock and a 4-yard run by Cayden Fant. East Central, now 10-0, will host Greene County (9-3) in a second round matchup next Friday night in Hurley.
