BOWLING TEAMS TOP CLARK, LEE COUNTIES

The Montgomery County High School bowling teams continued their successful start to the 2014-2015 season last week, each winning matches with Clark County and Lee County. Coach Jason Crouch’s boys defeated Clark County 6-1 and Lee County 4-3 to improve to 4-0 while the Lady Indians, coached by Allison Whaley, topped Clark County 6-1 and Lee County 5-2 and now stand 3-1 on the season. Senior Andy Cora and junior Brack Castle led the Indians over the Cardinals at Sterling Lanes. Cora had games of 257 and 206 and also finished strike, spare in one of the Baker games to help the Indians edge Clark County 160-157. Cora’s 257 and Castle’s 244 in the opening game led to a resounding 630-382 win over Clark to set the tone for the match. Castle also came back with a 177 in game two as the Indians won 531-479. On the other team, sophomore Damion Faulkner had games of 197 and 194 to lead the Tribe to wins of 519-380 and 484-466. Mason Hatton rolled a 189 in their fist game. Crouch substituted freely in the contest, using 12 bowlers in all from the Indians’ 17-member roster. Clark’s only win came in the second Baker game. In a match at Lee County the Indians had some problems adjusting to the lanes and lost the overall pin-fall point but were able to pull out a 4-3 victory. In the opening game, Lee County sophomore Jacob Osborne rolled a 247 and freshman Aaron Warner posted a 211 as Lee County won 604-557. The Indians were solid in that game with Cora putting up a 197, Castle a 190 and Braedon Toy a 170 but it wasn’t enough. That team came back to win their second game 580-551 with Toy scoring a season-best 222 to lead the way. Cora had a 191 and Isaiah Danis’s 167 was the third score used toward the team total. Osborne had a 214 and Warner a 202 but their third score was only a 135. In each match teams bowl four and throw out the bottom score. Team two carried the match for the Indians but it wasn’t easy. Mason Hatton had games of 173 and 165 to lead the way as the Indians won 478-471 and 467-458. Sophomore Noah Combs had games of 202 and 200. Lee County loaded up their Baker teams, using Osborne, Warner and Combs in both matches. It worked in the second Baker match that Lee County won easily but the Indians added Damion Faulkner to their No. 1 Baker team and that group pulled out a 179-151 win with Faulkner recording a pair of strikes. That clinched the match even though the Bobcats won the final Baker game and the overall score, 2,435 to 2,387. Whaley used 12 bowlers in the Lady Indians’ 6-1 win over Clark County with several different bowlers stepping up at the right time to produce the easy win. Judy Willoughby, a junior, had a high game of 128 as the Lady Indians overcame a 179 game by Clark’s Madison Witt to win the opening game of the match 362-355. Clark County had only five bowlers so they had to count all of their scores for one team and had just two scores to count in the games for the second team. Junior Natalie Dunaway had Montgomery County’s high game, a 169, to lead the Tribe to a 392-372 win in the second game for the first team as Witt had a 170 for the Lady Cardinals. Senior Lexi Nichols rolled a 146 as the best game for a consistent season team as they won 393-176 and 387-193. Nichols had a strike and a spare in the first Baker game as the Indians’ won 109-105 and then Clark County managed their only win, 126-100, in the second Baker game. Team balance was again the key in the 5-2 win over Lee County as the Lady Indians had to overcome a standout effort by the Lady Bobcats’ Adri Roberts. The youngster had games of 169 and 226 for Lee County but Montgomery County still managed to win those games 525-435 and 533-484 even though Montgomery County had only one score in those two games that topped 135. Judy Willoughby had a 181 in one of those games. That was the high game rolled so far this season for Montgomery County’s girls. The Lady Indians won the other two games 363-329 and 338-306 with senior Sarah Fields recording a 126 to lead the way in one game and junior Kristen Tibbetts bowling a 118 in the other. Lee County won the first Baker game 146-123 and then edged Montgomery County 132 to 131 in the second. In that game Dunaway had a strike in the fifth frame and came back in the tenth to hit back-to-back strikes but finished with a six count on the final ball as Lee County held on for the on-point win.
