JAGS LOOK TO HEAL DURING BYE WEEK

In the second quarter of Ridgeland-Hardeeville’s 50-0 loss at Hilton Head last Friday night, the Jaguars weren’t concerned about football. Teammate Kamrin Williams was on a stretcher after a sideline hit. Before Williams was put in an ambulance, his teammates walked up to him and offered encouragement. “We lost our leader,” Jaguars coach Jahmaal Nelson said after the game. “We never quite recovered from that.” After visiting Williams later that night, Nelson said: “He is doing well. No major injury.” According to Nelson, the team’s trainers were going to evaluate Williams this week. The Jaguars, a Class AAA school, trailed 10-0 at the time, but a close game soon became a rout. After the Seahawks (Class AAAA) took a 7-0 lead on Bryce Singleton’s 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, the Jags threatened with a good drive. Starting at their own 37, Jabari Williams, Davontay Dopson, and Freddie Aiken took turns running the ball to reach the Seahawks’ 38. On first-and-10, however, Williams threw an interception. “We missed some opportunities,” Coach Nelson said. “We want our running game to set up our passing game. We’ll keep working on that.” After the interception, the Seahawks drove to the Jaguars 10. Key stops by Kam Williams, Myles Pinckney, and Cedric Hunt forced the Seahawks to settle for a field goal and a 10-0 lead. Soon after Kam Williams’ injury, Zion Wilson tackled Tyler Hamilton for a 16-yard loss. But on the next play, Singleton hit Taquan Pope for a 58-yard touchdown and a 17-0 lead. A 24-0 halftime deficit became 31-0 when Hamilton broke several tackles and returned the second half kickoff for a touchdown. “They were trying to tackle with their arms,” Nelson said. “They have to tackle the right way.” Terry Pusha led the Jaguars with 11 tackles. “Terry played hard,” Nelson said. “He’s setting a good example.” The Jaguars (2-4), who have lost four consecutive games, have a bye this week. They will play host to May River for homecoming on Oct. 7. The game against the first-year Sharks (0-6), will open the Jaguars’ Region 8-AAA season. “It’s a time to heal,” Nelson said. “We’re gonna work, but I’ll give them a couple days off later in the week. There were some positives tonight. We’ll take those positives and keep going.”
