Hurdling cousins battle it out

HURDLING COUSINS BATTLE IT OUT

Hutchinson High junior Tyjai Adams was aware a star hurdler was coming up the ranks. She had a worthwhile adversary, and it was no surprise. "No, because she's my little cousin. I've been watching her," Adams said. "She broke my records in middle school." Freshman Janae Wren is in the midst of a magnificent first high school season. At the Hutchinson Invitational on Friday, Wren finished the 300-meter hurdles in a blur, flying by the competition - including Adams. "I actually came out of the box faster than I usually do," Wren said. Wren felt compelled to prove herself in the 300. After knocking herself out of the finals of the 100-meter hurdles by tripping over a hurdle in the preliminaries, she needed a statement to salvage her day. Wren was nearly flawless in the 300. She made subtle contact with the next-to-last hurdle, but otherwise looked like a veteran throughout the race on her way to a time of 47.64. Maize's Taylor Holmes was second with a time of 49.01. Adams was third in 49.36. Adams has been a willing mentor for Wren, even if it means helping her cousin overtake her throne as Hutchinson's top hurdler. Wren studies Adams attentively. "I think her just working on her lead leg - like what happened in the 100s," Adams said. "Once she gets that, she's going to be unstoppable in both of them." Adams, whose best event is the 100 hurdles, still has a stranglehold on that event. She won with a time of 14.83, more than a second better than the rest of the field. "Keep your speed and attack the hurdles. She's amazing with that," Wren said. "I always watch her." Wren has put Adams on notice that she intends to chase her down in the 100 over time. Although Wren may be family, Adams is still a fiery rival in her heart, and as it stands, still the Salthawks' queen of the quicker hurdles. "No. No, no, no. She has me in the 300s - for now," Adams said. "The 100 is my race. She can't have it."
