Five Lady Indians named to All-Region soccer

FIVE LADY INDIANS NAMED TO ALL-REGION SOCCER

Five members of the 2014 Montgomery County High School girls’ soccer team were recognized on the All-10th Region team announced last week and selected by the regions’ coaches. Senior fullback Julia Barker made the All-Region first team, sophomore forward Madison Cline was named to the second team and seniors Skylar Porter, Zoe Wafford and Sydney Ellen Gooding made the third team. In all there were a total of 38 players selected from the 12 schools in the region. Barker, a player with tremendous speed on the backline of defense for Montgomery County, overcame an off-season knee injury to have an outstanding senior season. Zoe Wafford, who’ll continue her soccer career next year at Pikeville University, was also a defensive specialist for the Lady Indians while Gooding, the goalkeeper, recorded six shutouts on the season. Senior forward Skylar Porter was named to the third team. Porter was Montgomery County’s offensive set-up person, recording a dozen assists in just 16 games while the sophomore Cline led the Lady Indians with eight goals and also had four assists. Bourbon County’s Mady Tipton was the only sophomore to make the first team while Cline was the only sophomore on the second team and the only other underclassman on that group was Kelby Gaunce of Harrison County. There were several players who’ll be returning next year named to the third team including Clark County’s Shannon Ramey (freshman) and Brennan Woosley (sophomore), Bourbon County’s Jalin Miles (junior) and Haleigh Yazell (junior) Pendleton County’s MaKayla Bishop (junior and Campbell County’s Stephanie Szovati (junior). Campbell County and Clark County led the region with six players each from their teams selected on the honor squads while Montgomery County, Bourbon County and Bishop Brossart had five players each that were recognized. Clark County’s Brooke Abner was named the Offensive Player of the Year and Campbell County’s Holly Schwarber was tabbed as the region’s Defensive Player of the Year.
