THREES CARRY WINNEBAGO

Winnebago's three-point shooters came in waves against Wahoo's defense, and the Warriors weren't able to withstand the barrage. The fifth-ranked Indians were 13-of-24 from beyond the arc in Thursday's 66-50 win against No. 3 Wahoo in the first round of the Class C-1 state tournament at the Devaney Sports Center. Winnebago (25-1) sprinted to a 12-2 lead midway through the opening quarter thanks to three threes in the first three minutes from senior Mathew Wingett, who finished with a game-high 24 points. Isaiah Medina added 21 points, all on three-pointers, and 6-foot-5 sophomore post David Wingett scored 12 points and pulled down nine rebounds. David Wingett scored off an alley-oop pass from Cory Cleveland midway through the final period, and earlier caught a missed shot with one hand and slammed it through the hoop. Jake Scheef closed his high school career with 19 points to lead Wahoo (19-7). "They're a terrific team and we knew they could shoot it," Wahoo coach Kevin Scheef said. "We tried to pull our 1-3-1 back in to not get overextended and try to get to the shooters. We didn't get to them quick enough, but there were a lot of shots they hit with somebody in their face. They're really, really good." Every time it looked as if Wahoo might rally, Winnebago had an answer. When the Warriors narrowed the gap to 12 points with 2:27 left in the third quarter, Winnebago answered with back-to-back threes by David Wingett and Medina. That was the last time Winnebago's lead was less than 15 points. "We watched tape on the 1-3-1 and I told the boys that we just had to move the ball, we have to move the ball, and if we keep it moving, they're going to get tired faster," Winnebago coach Jeff Berridge said. "Good diagonal passing can beat any zone." The Indians also held a 34-25 rebounding edge, as David Wingett and Kobe Smith combined for 19. Winnebago's defense limited Wahoo to 35 percent shooting. "We always stress that little things win games, and rebounding is one of them," Berridge said. "I just tell them we have to box out and go get the ball."
