The Montgomery County cross country teams won four out of six divisions Sept. 20 at the GRC Coaches Classic at Winchester. The varsity girls', middle school boys' and boys' and girls' elementary teams all finished first. The girls' varsity defeated teams from Clark County, Powell County and Bath County to win their title. Marissa Forrest finished third overall in a time of 23:51 to pace the Lady Indians while Chyann Sargent was fifth in 24:24 and Lacey Johnson came in sixth in 26:06. Hannah Shoupe, running in only her second varsity race, finished ninth in 27:26 and Liberty Smallwood was 10th in 28 minutes flat. Coach Hopey Newkirk's boys' squad ran without four of its top six runners due to other commitments on that day. They were led by freshman Austin Terrell who finished in sixth place in a time of 21:12. Ryan Thomas was 10th in 21:23 and they were followed by Thomas Willoughby (24th in 23:32), Sean Greer (25th in 23:33), Preston Crump (26th in 23:45), Jeremiah Taylor (29th in 24:19), Will Patrick (30th in 25:04) and Trey Smallwood (31st in 26:16). The Indians did not field a team in the girls' middle school race but did have Katie Johnson finish sixth in 13:24 and Paige Blevins eighth in 13:53. In the elementary races the Indians won in both boys and girls and Logan Stafford and Lauren Patrick were the medalists.
