The regular season has been more than Westmoore baseball fans could have hoped for. The Jaguars (24-10, 11-3) had to replace some key starters and had a new coach in Joe Patterson. Still, there was enough talent on this year’s squad to garner the attention of opposing coaches. It was a popular opinion among the Class 6A coaches that Westmoore would be one of the teams to beat in 2016, and the Jaguars proved that to be true, winning District 6A-1. But the tough part is still ahead and Patterson knows if the school is to win just its second state baseball title ever, it will need to keep producing at this high level. “You just kind of have to stay the course,” Patterson said. “Your ultimate goal in the regular season is to win the district, and we accomplished that.” It was largely on the shoulders of three seniors, that Westmoore manufactured its success. Braidyn Fink, Brandon Zaragoza and DeShawn Lookout anchored the Jaguars, giving Patterson plenty of leadership outside of the dugout. Fink, who is committed to OU, is Westmoore’s No. 1 option on the mound. Zaragoza hits leadoff and plays shortstop. Lookout hits third and mans centerfield. While Lookouts ability at the plate has been critical to Westmoore’s success, his defense has been just as valuable. “He plays a tremendous centerfield. He probably saves two or three runs a game,” Patterson said. “It takes about 10 games to get used to, because you think balls are hits and he’s out there catching them. It kind of gets you spoiled after a while. He makes catches you don’t normally see on a regular basis out there.” The biggest question mark to begin the season was figuring out the catcher spot. Cale Francis has slid into that role and provided the Jaguars a lift not only defensively but offensively as well. He has improved throughout the season, allowing Patterson to put together a powerful and complete lineup. Westmoore made it to the state title game last year, but lost in dramatic fashion, 9-8 to Owasso. The year before, the Jaguars made it to the state semifinals. This year, Westmoore has another opportunity to win its first state title since 1994. The field is pretty wide open. Even the defending state champion Rams lost twice in district play. Patterson doesn’t want its team to get ahead of itself, but just as when the Jaguars began the season, there’s clearly potential.
