It was reversal of fortune

IT WAS REVERSAL OF FORTUNE

Hagen Kent had a good start to his match Thursday at the Hutchinson High North Gym. Taking on Salina Central's Isaac Korniek in the 126-pound match, the Hutchinson junior scored a quick takedown and led 2-0. Kent was in control for most of the first period. But in the waning seconds, disaster nearly struck. Korinek tied the match on a reversal, and then he had Kent on his back. Kent was on the brink of being pinned. Yet, he kicked free, and came back from a three-point deficit to win 9-8 during Hutchinson's 38-28 dual loss. "I got too sloppy is basically what happened," Kent said. "I didn't lock it up high enough, and I was going too fast." Still, even when Kent was on his back, Hutchinson coach Mike Garcia wasn't concerned. "We're trying to find some offense and score some points," Garcia said. "Hagen wanted to do that, but he got put in a headlock and gave up five points. But we still felt like he would score." Down 5-3 after the first period, Kent returned to his dominant form in the second period, scoring three takedowns. He also allowed Korinek up twice, giving Korinek a pair of escape points, but Kent led 9-7 after two periods before holding on. "I got mad at myself, but I knew I had to shrug it off," Kent said after nearly being pinned in the first period. "I had to move on." Kent was one of four Salthawks to win a match. Lance Page (113), Lukas Schweigert (160) and Ricardo Roman (heavyweight) also won, with Schweigert being the only Salthawk to win by pin. Hutchinson also earned forfeit wins from Brian Gates (106) and Dakotah Gruver (132). The dual's most entertaining match didn't go Hutchinson's way, but to Garcia, that wasn't important. Francisco Escamilla (220) made his season debut after injury kept him out, and he battled Central's Mike McMullen to overtime. Escamilla nearly had a takedown at the end of the second period, while McMullen's apparent takedown at the end of the third period was about one second too late. They went to overtime tied 1-1. But, almost predictably since this was Escamilla's debut, Escamilla wore down and couldn't slow McMullen's momentum in a 10-2 loss. "It was the first competition for Francisco," Garcia said. "He was released for competition on Monday, and he's only had eight practices so far. The kid he wrestled was good, too. He had a chance to score some points. Francisco will be fine. He was just dead tired." Roman finished the dual with a solid 1-0 win against Chase Livengood. After keeping Livengood on the mat in the second period, Roman earned a third-period escape for the only point. "Ricardo's had a good year," Garcia said. "He's beat some good kids, and he's just good in winning close matches. He doesn't give up a lot of points."
