QUITMAN BESTS MENDENHALL 8-7

MENDENHALL — Quitman High School has had tough time catching breaks. They caught several Tuesday night. Thanks to a five-run seventh inning, the Panthers rallied past Mendenhall 8-7 in Region 5-4A play. "We finally caught a break tonight, and I feel like we grew up a lot as a team tonight," Quitman coach Brian Goodman said. "We've had some bad things go against us all year, and I kept telling the kids keep playing, and good things happen." Quitman (2-7, 1-2) trailed 7-3 heading to the top of the seventh, but the Panthers would send 10 batters to the plate and score five runs. Nathan Skinner had an RBI single, two runs scored on passed balls, the tying run scored on a throwing error and the go ahead run came in on a Seth Fuller groundout. "We haven't been playing very well, and the guys kept playing and fighting, and I couldn't be more proud of them," Goodman said. "(We have a) young team, so we are just learning how to win." Nathan Skinner and Peyton Reynolds each had two hits to lead Quitman offensively. In his first time pitching in a varsity game, Trevor Reynolds (1-0) picked up the win on the mound in relief, lasting 5 1/3 innings and surrending one hit and three walks while tallying eight strikeouts. "Everything was working for me tonight,” Reynolds said. “I located my fastball well, and my curve ball was working really well. It was amazing how we came back and won. We needed that win bad." Jordan Jenkins would have three hits to lead Mendenhall (3-8).
