GREYHOUNDS RACE PAST RAIDERS

NEWPORT — For the third consecutive year a nonconference game pitting Newport against Nettleton ended in a victory for the Greyhounds as Newport defeated the Raiders 46-31 on Friday night to complete the trifecta. Newport, a member of the 4A-2 conference, defeated the 5A-East Raiders behind 543 yards of total offense. The victory comes after a 28-7 win for the Greyhounds last year and a 38-22 win in 2012, helping Newport improve to 1-0 for the second straight year under Don Harrison. "Anytime you're 1-0, that's where you want to be," Harrison said after the game. "That was our goal from day one was to be 1-0 because it gets you rolling and feeling good about yourself. We still did a lot of things wrong tonight that we have to go back and fix." Newport finished with 414 yards on the ground, led by 217 yards and six touchdowns from junior running back Carl Turner, who ran the ball 25 times. Turner scored on runs of four and 40 yards in the second quarter, five and 25 yards in the third quarter and from 12 and 54 yards away in the fourth quarter. Turner did fumble the ball twice, though. "He did a great job. He did struggle to hold onto the ball, but it was so wet and humid out here," Harrison said. "All you can say is ‘wow,' though. Ben Collier did well, too. Carl Turner did an unbelievable job tonight, though, and it all starts with our offensive line. They took care of business and our hard workers." Collier finished the game with 133 yards and a touchdown that came from eight yards for the Greyhounds only score of the first quarter when they trailed 7-6 after Jaylin Small scored on a five-yard quarterback option keeper to open the game for Nettleton. All together the two teams combined for five turnovers, four coming on fumbles by Newport players, including two from senior Deandre Elston, who finished the game with 32 yards of total offense. "You can't have turnovers," Harrison said. "I was really proud of the boys gutting it out, though. We had seven guys going both ways, and they gutted it out and played like champions, and I'm proud of them." After the opening touchdown Newport only allowed Nettleton three more points in the first half, a 37-yard field goal by senior kicker Garrett Miller with 10:15 left in the second quarter for a 10-6 lead. Turner would then score twice for Newport before halftime on runs of four and 40 yards, the latter coming on first and 40 with 2:53 left in the opening half. Small scored his second of three touchdowns to start the second half and trim the Nettleton deficit to four points, 21-17, before Turner would score two more touchdown of his own from five and 25 yards out to push the Newport lead to 33-17 with just under two minutes remaining in the third quarter. Turner scored again on a 12-yard run with 10:06 left in the fourth quarter to push the Newport lead to 39-17. That was followed by a 70-yard touchdown run from Nettleton back Joe Frazier, who finished the game with 113 yards. Both teams would score again in the final minutes of the game as Turner would add a 54-yard touchdown run for Newport and Small a 88-yard keeper for Nettleton to set the final score 46-31. Newport quarterback Gunner Bullard finished with 127 passing yards on 10 completions and 41 yards rushing. "He took care of business and didn't make any bad mistakes and took care of the plays," Harrison said. Sometimes he audibled us out of bad plays and put us in good plays, and that's what he does." Nettleton finished the game with 336 yards of total offense, 270 coming on the ground, led by Smalls 131 and three touchdowns. "We played good defensively but we just ran out of gas there towards the end," Harrison said. "That's a good football team we just beat. They're going to go a long way. Their coaching staff is really good. They're going to be good. Our coaching staff did a good job too but the boys just gutted it out tonight."
