NETTLETON CLIPS VALLEY VIEW

Nettleton gave Valley View a rough welcome to the 5A-East conference in volleyball Tuesday night, defeating the Lady Blazers in four games at Raider Gym. The Lady Raiders (2-1) defeated Valley View in the conference opener for both schools, winning 25-22, 17-25, 25-19, 25-20 before a packed gymnasium and an active student section. It was the first game in the 5A-East conference for Valley View after moving up from the 4A-Northeast. "It was an excellent all-out effort where we played all 11 kids on our bench," Nettleton head coach Vickie Davis said. "The kids were willing to just go in and do what we asked them to do. They have spent all summer trying to figure out how to be a team, because some of the kids who have never set before are setting and kids who have never hit before are hitting. It's just been kind of a mixture and it felt really good seeing it all came together." Davis said she told her team to go home, celebrate and enjoy the victory, but to be prepared to practice at their best today with Paragould on the schedule Thursday. "I know we have to get back to work and have to play Valley View again at their place," Davis said with a smile. "So we just need to celebrate tonight and move on. We defended our home floor and that was one of our goals this season." Nettleton jumped ahead 13-5 in the first game and later 17-7, only to see Valley View go on a 7-0 run and cut the Raider lead to 17-14. Nettleton stretched the lead to six points, 23-17, before holding on for the 25-22 game one win. The Lady Raiders lost the second game 25-17 as Valley View broke a 7-7 tie with an 8-1 run to pull ahead 15-8 and later 19-12. The two teams traded scores to end the second game, but it was too late for Nettleton as Valley View tied the match. "I think we lost our focus a little bit and some of that can be due to our inexperience and youth," Davis said of the second game. "Valley View jumped out on us a little bit and we kind of panicked. We get frustrated sometimes as we're still learning how to fix mistakes and things like that. Some of that falls on me, too, and I'll take my blame there." The third game went to Nettleton as the Lady Raiders jumped ahead 5-0 and won 25-19. Nettleton allowed Valley View to tie the third game 7-7 before taking the lead for good at 9-7 and later stretching it out to 19-13 before winning by six. Nettleton jumped ahead to start the fourth game as the Lady Raiders led 17-11 and 20-12. Valley View closed the gap to 23-19 before Nettleton finally won 25-20. "You have to give credit to Valley View," Davis said. "They're a good team and have a lot of good players. They're going to sneak up on people, play well and do things right." Jenna Hodges, Sara Turner and Alden Weeks led Nettleton with two aces each, while Morgan McCall led with 21 kills. Gabby Sherman finished with 20 digs, followed by 14 from McCall and 13 from Kennedy Sellers. Sellers finished with 22 assists and McCall added 15. Reagan Rees led Valley View with three aces. Riley Millay had a team-high 16 kills, followed by eight from Canaan Richardson. Rees also led the way with 14 digs, followed by 10 from Millay.
