RIDERS SURGE PAST DAVIES

Grand Forks Red River defenseman Keenen Berning was on the ice for all of the Roughriders’ goals in their 7-2 East Region win over Fargo Davies on Tuesday at Purpur Arena. It was no coincidence, Red River coach Bill Chase said. “Keenen is a talented and skilled player who can see the ice so well,” Chase said of his senior leader. “He and our other big guys shifted gears.” The shift to overdrive came after the Eagles tied it at 2-2 early in the third period on a Hunter Lucas goal in a scramble in front of the Riders’ net. “When they tied it up, it kind of kick-started us,” Berning said. “We were trying to be too cute, with too much finesse and we were fumbling and bumbling. We started to get the puck in deep rather than fumble around with it.” Berning had two goals and two assists while blue-line partner Brock Montgomery and Maxwell Miller each had a goal and an assist and forward Jacob Knecht had the first assist on three goals. “We came out sloppy and were not forechecking,” Berning said. “But then we started grinding on them and got things going. We started slowly, but then we got a gut check. All four lines got at least one point and everyone was all in.” Red River’s last three goals came in the game’s last three minutes on a power play from a five-minute major for boarding. The Riders had four goals on power plays while the Eagles had just one. The Eagles entered the game with a win over Detroit Lakes and a 2-1 loss to perennial powerhouse Roseau. Coach Brian Davidson said he was pleased with all but the game’s last nine minutes. “We skated well for two and one-half periods, but (Red River) has a great power play that moves the puck really well,” Davidson said. Red River goalie Jacob Mehlhoff had eight saves while Davies’ Jordan Elliott had 29, including all 13 shots he faced in the first period. The Roughriders are 2-0, with their next game on Tuesday at Devils Lake.
