MULLINS AND WERTH QUALIFY FOR STATE

As a team, the Hutchinson Salthawks missed qualifying for the girls 6A state golf tournament by the narrowest of margins Monday in the Dodge City Regional. The Salthawks finished fourth at Mariah Hills Golf Course by a mere one stroke to host Dodge City. Dodge City shot a 435 while Hutchinson shot a 436 on a windy day. After topping Dodge City a couple of times in multiple tournaments this year, head coach Charlie Pierce said the girls were pretty disappointed. “Dodge did play good, and that is what it all comes down to,” Pierce said. “We just needed to find one more shot. We would have made it because we would have won the tiebreaker. But we didn’t.” The Salthawks will still get to send some individuals to state. Junior Megan Mullins medaled and finished ninth with a score of 100. She tied for eighth, but lost in the playoff. Ashley Werth also will be joining Mullins at state and qualified with a score of 109. Pierce said it will be good to get his players some experience at state and the Salthawks will return five starters back next year.
